Crocheted Baby Set No. 1240

Original Design by Alice Fowler, P O Box 787, Colorado Springs, CO 80901

Materials:  Bear Brand Wonderized Babyfair, Lullaby, or Pompadour (6 1-ounce balls).  1 ball yarn for trim and ribbon.  Bone Crochet Hook No. 1.

Gauge:  Chain 10 = 1 inch

Abbreviations:

st---stitch dc---double crochet sc---single crochet
sl st---slip stitch ch---chain *  *---repeat between
sk---skip sh---shell pr---previous row

Pattern:  Alternate rows of dc and double loop st (dlp) made as follows from back of work:  With second finger, hold yarn down behind work, insert hook in next dc, draw up lp, yo, through lp on hook, drop lp from finger, draw yarn down again with 2nd finger, insert hook in same dc as before; draw up lp, yo through 1st lp on hook, yo, through 3 lps on hook.  This stitch should be made fairly tight.  Ch 3, turn, at end of each lp st row.  Ch 1, turn, at end of each dc row.

Sacque. 

Begin at neck.  Ch 74.

Row 1.  Dc in 6th ch from hook, (ch 1, sk 1, dc in next) 4 times, ch 1, sk 1, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next, (ch 1, sk 1, dc in next) 5 times, ch 1, sk 1, (dc,  ch 3, dc) in next, (ch 1, sk 1, dc in next) 10 times, ch 1, sk 1, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next, (ch 1, sk 1, dc in next) 5 times, ch 1, sk 1, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next, (ch 1, sk 1, dc in next) 6 times, ch 1, turn.

Row 2.  * Sc in dc, sc under ch 1 *, repeat * to * to corner, 5 sc under ch 3, continue around in same pattern.  Ch 3, turn.

Row 3.  * Dc in each sc to corner, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) under 5 sc pr---draw yarn up until these dc are even with the other dc of the row---this is a long dc *, repeat * to * around, ch 1, turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 6 times, and add one more row 2.  Ch 3, turn.

Body.

Row 1.  * 3 dc (sh) in next, ch 3, sc in next *, repeat * to * across front, catch corners of yoke together, continue across back, join corners as before, and complete across, ending ch 3, sc in last st, ch 4, turn.

Row 2.  * Sh, in first dc of first sh, dh 3, sc in 3rd of same sh, ch 3 *, repeat across.  THIS IS PATTERN ROW. 

Repeat until work measures 6 inches from yoke.  Fasten off.

Sleeve.

Row 1.  Join yarn at underarm joining, ch 3 for first dc, 2 dc in base of ch, * ch 3, sk 1, sc in next, ch 3, sk 1, 3 dc in next *, repeat around, join to top of first ch 3, ch 3, turn.

Row 2.  Sh in first dc of next sh, ch 3, sc in 3rd dc, etc in pattern around, end ch 3, join to base of first ch 3 of row, ch 3, turn.

Continue in pattern until sleeve measures 5 1/2 inches.

Cuff. 

Row 1.  Sc in each dc around, join.

Row 2.  Ch 3, dc in each sc, join.

Row 3.  Ch 1, sc in each dc, join.

Row 4.  Same as 1st row of sleeve, join and fasten off.

Bonnet.

Row 1.  Ch 1, join in ring.  Ch 3, 17 dc in ring, join to top of ch 3, which counts as 1 dc (18 dc), ch 1, turn.

Row 2.  * Sc in first dc, 2 sc in next *, repeat around, join, ch 3, turn.

Row 3, and all odd-numbered rows:  Dc in each sc, join.  Ch 1, turn.

                Note:  Ch 3, turn, at end of each even numbered row.  Ch 1, turn at end of each odd numbered row.

Rows 4 and 6.  * 2 sc in next, sc in next *, repeat around.

Row 8.  * Sc in each of 3, 2 sc in next *, repeat around.

Row 10.  Sc even.

Row 12.  * Sc in each of 5, 2 sc in next *, repeat around.

Row 14.  * Sc in 4, 2 sc in next *, repeat around.

Row 16.  Sc even.

Row 17.  * Sk 2, 3 dc (sh) in next, ch 3, sk 2, sc in next, ch 3 *, repeat * to * until there are 16 sh, turn.

Work in pattern until bonnet measures 5 or 5 1/2 inches from center back. 

Without breaking yarn, work 1 row sc across lower edge of bonnet, drawing to shape by skipping a st as necessary.

Frill.

Row 1.  With center back toward you, fasten yarn at lower right edge of bonnet, at the front edge of 4th row from front, ch 3, sc in 2nd dc of first sh, * ch 3, sc under next ch 3, ch 3, sc under next ch 3, ch 3, sc in 2nd dc of next sh *, repeat across, ch 3, turn.

Row 2.  * Sh under ch 3, ch 3, sc in next sc, ch 3 *, repeat across, ch 3, turn.

Row 3.  Pattern across.  Fasten off.

Bootee.  Begin with sole.  Ch 20.

Row 1.  2 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 15, 5 dc in next, 1 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in same st as 3 ch, 2 dc in last, join to top of 3 ch.

Row 2.  Ch 3, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 7, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in same st as 3 ch, join.

Row 3.  Ch 3, (1 dc in next, 2 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in each of next 14.  (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 7 times, 1 dc in each of next 13, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in same st as 3 ch, join.

Row 4.  Ch 3, 1 dc around the post of each dc, inserting hook from back, right to left, join.  (68 dc, counting 3 ch)

Rows 5 and 7.  Sc even

Rows 6 and 8.  Dc even.  Fasten off.

Instep.  Beginning with ch 3 at center back, count 28 sts on left side of shoe, join yarn, ch 3, dc in next 11, turn, sc on 12, repeat these 2 rows 3 times, sc one more row.  Catch remaining lp on hook into 15th st from center back (do not count ch 3) on right side of shoe, and with instep piece toward you, sc it to right side of shoe, 2 sc at corner, sc across toe, inserting hook from right to left under each st, 2 sc at corner, sc instep and shoe together along left side, ending in 15th st from center back (count ch 3 as 1 dc).

Beading.  With toe of shoe toward you, ch 4, * sk 1 st, dc in next, ch 1 *, repeat * to * across instep and around shoe, join to 3rd st of ch 4 (21 dc, counting ch 4).

Top.  Row 1.  Ch 3, 2 dc in base of ch, ch 3, sk 2, sc in next, ch 3, sk 2, sh in next, continue around in pattern, join to top of ch 3, ch 3, turn.

Row 2.  Pattern around, turn.

Rows 3, 4, 5, and 6.  Sl st on ch 3 to first dc of shell in order to keep pattern.  Fasten off.

Edge all garments.  * Ch 3, sl st in next *, repeat around.

Insert ribbons for ties.
