Crocheted Baby Set No. 1249

Materials:  4 1-ounce balls Bear Brand Babyfair or Bear Brand Wonderized Pompadour, Susan Bates Bone Crochet Hook No 1.

Gauge:  Chain 8 = 1 inch

Wheel Medallion:  Ch 8, join in ring.  Make 16 sc in ring.

First Spoke:  Ch 8, draw up a lp around the ch close to needle, yo, through the lp, * lp around ch again, yo, through lp, repeat from * until 16 lps on hook, insert hook in next sc, yo through all lps on hook.  Draw yarn to allow spoke to curve slightly.  Keep the lp on the hook idle until called for.

Second Spoke:  Insert hook in next sc, draw a lp through and ch 4, draw last ch through idle st on hook, ch 4 again.  Now make 8 lps on each ch 4, insert hook in next sc, draw yarn through all lps on hook as before.  Repeat as for second spoke 6 times.

Insert hook in last sc, draw yarn through ch 4, drop last ch from hook, insert hook in middle of first spoke, catch dropped ch and draw it through spoke and idle st.

Border of Med:  * Ch 8, join with sl st to tip of next spoke, repeat from * around, sl st to beginning of ch row, turn, work 8 hdc under each ch 8, join.  Fasten off.

Sacque:  Begin with yoke.  Make 10 Med.  Join 4 for back of yoke, one on each shoulder, and 2 for each half of front yoke.

To join med, complete first med.  Make second to last row, * make 4 hdc, drop st from hook, * insert hook in 4th hdc of one 8 dc group of first med, draw dropped st through, make 4 more hdc under same ch of second med.  Repeat * to * above, join in some manner to next group of first med, and continue as before.  Do this one more time (3 joinings) and complete second med as first.  From this, you will be able to join remaining meds in order.

Body.  Row 1.  Join yarn in fourth hdc of lower corner of left front, * ch 8, sk 1 hdc, repeat from * across back and other front, joining corners of yoke as you come to them, end ch 4, dc in fourth st of lower right corner of yoke, ch 3, turn.

Row 2.  2 dc under ch 4, dc around 2 dc just made, * 2 dc under next ch 8, dc around 2 dc just made, repeat from * across, end dc in third st of last ch 8, turn.

Row 3.  * Ch 8, sk 2 dc, sl st in next, repeat across, ch 3, turn.

Row 4.  * 2 dc under ch 8, dc around 2 dc just made, repeat across, end dc in first st of ch 8, turn.

Rows 3 & 4 are pattern rows.  Repeat until work measures 6 inches below yoke.  Fasten off.

Sleeves.  Join yarn at underarm.  Ch 8, sk 2 hdc, repeat around, join with sl st at starting place, ch 4, turn.  Work * 2 dc in ch 8, dc around 2 dc, repeat from * around, join with sl st to fourth st of ch.  Turn.

Continue in pattern until sleeve measures 5 1/2 inches, ending with ch row.

Cuff.  2 sc under each ch 8, one row of ch 8, sk 1 sc, ch 8, etc.  Repeat rows 4 and 3 of body.  Fasten off.

Neckline.  Join yarn in corner st of left front, (ch 8, sk 3, sl st in next) 3 times, ch 4, dc in corner, ch 4, sk 3, sl st in next, continue around in same way, end sl st in corner st of right front, ch 3, turn dc group in each ch 8, dc in each corner dc, around, dc in corner st.  Add one row of ch 8 lps around the entire garment.  Insert ribbon in dc row at neckline.

Bonnet.  Make 1 med same as first med of yoke.  Ch 8, 16 lps on ch, sk 1 sc, insert hook in next and draw through lps on hook.  Keeping st on hook idle, sl st over next 3 sc, ch 4, draw idle st through, ch 4, 16 lps on ch, sk 1 sc, and continue as before.  Make 16 spokes around med, join, * ch 8, sl st in tip of next spoke, repeat from * around, join, turn, make 8 hdc under each ch 8, join.

Make 1 row of ch 8 lps, with sl st in each 4th hdc (32 lps) turn and work pattern over 28 lps for about 3 1/2 inches, ending with dc row.  Turn, work 1 row hdc around entire bonnet, 1 hdc in each dc across front, 3 dc in each end sp and each lp across back.

Make 1 row of spokes across front of hood, with sl st in 3 hdc between spokes.

Addd 1 row ch 8 lps joined in tips of spokes, and 1 row 8 hdc (from wrong side) in each chain, finishing lower edge with ch 8 lps across.

Insert ribbon in last dc group row across front of hood.

Bootee.  Begin with sole:  Ch 20.

Row 1.  2 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 15, 5 dc in next, 1 dc in each of next 15 down opposite side of ch, 2 dc in last, join to top of 3 ch.

Row 2.  Ch 3, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 7, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in same st as 3 ch, join.

Row 3.  Ch 3, (1 dc in next, 2 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in each of next 14, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 7 times, 1 dc in each of next 13.  (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in same st as 3 ch, join.

Row 4.   Ch 2, 1 hdc around the post of each dc, inserting hook from back, right to left, join (68 hdc, counting 2 ch).

Row 5.  * Ch 8, sk 2, sl st in next, repeat from *, join to starting ch.

Row 6.  Ch 3, dc group (see Row 4 of Sacque) in each ch, join, ch 2, turn.

Row 7.  Hdc in each dc around, join, fasten off.

Instep:  Make 1 med as for first med of yoke, except last row, make * 8 hdc under first lp, 4 hdc under next, repeat from *, join, sl st to 4th st of 8 hdc group.

Beginning with center back, count 16 sts on rt side of shoe, insert hook in this st and sc med to rt side of shoe, 2 sc at corner, sc across toe, 2 sc at corner, and sc to left side of shoe, ending in 16th st from center back, ch 4, sk 1st of med, dc in next, * ch 1, sk 2, dc in next across med and around, joining last ch 1 to 3d st of ch 4.

*******  sk 1st of med:  Original pattern instructions are written in this manner verbatim.  Most likely means "sk first st of med" as later in this same sentence of directions, the pattern is written "3d st", likely meaning "third st".

Add pattern rows 3 and 4 of Sacque until bootee is desired height.  Fasten off.  Insert ribbon in dc beading.
