The ISeeSpots Farm Flock |
We started off with Buff Orpington chickens and have enjoyed them for several years. In the meantime, we have played with a few other breeds of chickens and just not been as satisfied as we were with the Buffs.
During the winter of 2009/2010, the decision was made to manage the chickens as we do the other poultry breeds: own a heritage breed that has much more use than just a novelty farm animal. After studying the ALBC website and a number of other resources, Buckeye chickens just caught our attention most dramatically.
The chicken itself was developed in the United States and is the only breed developed entirely by a woman (which just made it a bit more interesting to Mary Ellen). It is darker than a Rhode Island Red and has a Cornish-style body. The bird is a dual-purpose bird, meaning it is good as both a meat producer as well as an egg layer. Read more about this breed on the ALBC page devoted to this rare bird. Pictures will be coming as time permits.
