This is one of the most recommended "accessories" for the fiber artist.  When customers ask "what do I need", I suggest the center pull ball winder, a skein winder, a nostepinne (if you need to have a portable ball winding capability), and a niddy noddy.  The ball winder is usually the first recommended purchase and is an excellent suggestion for a gift.
Wind off a center pull ball from your drop spindle, spinning wheel, extra bobbins, from a skein of yarn, etc.  My own ball winder is still working strong and is in excellent condition, being purchased in 1994.
