Now In: Mary Ellen's List of Most Frequently Asked Questions

  1. I have paid with Paypal and get an error message when redirected back to your site.  Did my order go through correctly?   As of today (12/27/2008), I have never had a problem with orders going through and payment received through the shopping cart.  I have investigated this issue time and again, with blame being passed between Paypal and the Shopping Cart provider.  If you happen to get the complete URL of the error page to me, I might be able to get one or the other groups to find the root of this re-occurring problem and fix it permanently.  In the meantime, please accept my apologies and don't hesitate to double-check on order status if you are concerned!
  2. I would love to come visit your shop.  What are your hours?  My business is primarily online, although I welcome visitors anytime I am home.  I do have a full-time "day-job" as a renal dietitian in an outpatient kidney dialysis center as well as am active in church and family activities.  I will do my best to accommodate and work out a time to visit as these commitments allow.  I also highly encourage potential customers who are local to the Piedmont area of North Carolina to visit our local WONDERFUL selection of yarn shops.  We are truly blessed here in this area of the nation, and it is through your patronage that they can thrive and grow to be there for classes, help, and an excellent product line.
  3. I see that you carry "XXX" pattern line and I would like my own local yarn shop to offer this pattern group.  How can I make this happen?  I gladly help shop owners make contact with a number of pattern company authors who have been difficult to locate.  It took me several years to find contact information for a number of pattern lines that I offer on ISeeSpots.com.  It was finally through the generosity of a few shop owners that the information was made available.  My philosophy is that "when yarn aficionados work together, we all benefit".
  4. Do you have your own pattern line?  Yes, I have written directions for several patterns during the previous decade.  "Mary Ellen's Quick and Simple" patterns came about from sheer determination when my boys were very young and quite needy.  I needed knitting and crochet patterns that could be dropped at a moment's notice and then returned to later without worrying about lost place in directions.  It is my goal of 2009 to begin re-writing the patterns for standard yarns more broadly available (patterns originally written for handspun yarns) and potentially have a few patterns published by the end of the year.  These will be available to retail shops on a wholesale basis and possibly on my own online store.  Email me with questions regarding line, availability as well as any specific suggestions.
  5. I am having a problem with a pattern I purchased.  Can you help?  Most of the time, I can help with pattern deciphering and will quite often spend 1/2 hour to an hour on any given question.  Sometimes, I need to refer the question back to the pattern author, which is also done on an "as needed" basis.
  6. I am just wanting to order 1 pattern and shipping cost is more than the cost of the pattern.  Why is shipping so expensive?  Several years back, I sent most patterns via standard US Mail.  Over the course of 6-8 months, a number of pattern shipments were delayed in arrival, sometimes up to a month.  In the meantime, customers needed their patterns and we felt the mail had likely destroyed the package between my shop and the customer door---with a repeat shipment being sent to the customer.  Invariably, both sets of patterns would arrive within a day or so of each other.  Once I started sending orders out with US Priority Mail, I have not had a single order delayed in arrival or lost in transit.  Current costs for US Priority mail stamps are $4.80, and shipping costs are rounded for ease to $5.00.  I can make special arrangements and send patterns via standard mail, but the cost of stamps and envelopes usually run $2.50-$3.00.
  7. I used to see you at my favorite fiber fairs.  Why aren't you there anymore?  A couple years ago, my health was not so good.  Some days it was just an effort to get moving, much less be able to perform the monumental tasks involved in traveling to, setting up, running a booth, tearing down, and then driving home---all in the space of 3 days' time and sometimes alone.  Each fiber event that year occurred when I did have better energy (I have considered that a blessing from God), and all went well.  I did feel like it might be my warning to slow down, consolidate the business, and spend my vacation days with family rather than at fiber shows.  I have not regretted heeding the warning.
  8. I love the name of your shop.  Where did your name come from?  I began raising Jacob sheep in 1994.  They are a horned and spotted sheep breed, and hence the name.  We currently only have spotted ducks, Ancona Ducks, that keep the name accurate.  Other critters at the place include:  Shetland sheep, angora and cashmere goats, German angora rabbits, alpacas, Great Pyrenees dogs being tested in the Carolinas Great Pyrenees Rescue program, Buff Orpington chickens, American Buff Geese, pet dogs/cats/fish/parakeets.
